Almost every fraction struggle traces back to one of these:
1. Understanding what a fraction actually is
A fraction is equal parts of a whole. If a child still pictures the bottom number as just “a number” — rather than “how many equal pieces we cut the whole into” — then every fraction question is built on sand.
2. Equivalent fractions
Seeing that 1/2, 2/4, and 3/6 are the same amount is the heart of nearly everything that follows: comparing, ordering, and adding with unlike denominators. And equivalent fractions are really multiplication in disguise — which leads straight to the third skill.
3. Multiplication and division facts
To find common denominators or simplify a fraction, a child needs quick, confident recall of their times tables and the related division facts. If they’re still skip-counting on their fingers, fractions become exhausting before they even begin.
Why “more fractions practice” often makes it worse
The instinct, understandably, is to do more fractions worksheets. But if the real gap is two steps below — say, multiplication facts — then drilling fractions just piles new frustration on an unstable foundation. The child works harder, gets the same wrong answers, and slowly concludes they’re “just not a math person.” That belief does more lasting damage than the gap itself.
