Is My Child Ready for Next Year’s Math?

Somewhere in mid-August, the thought arrives: was math actually okay last year? The report card said something vague, June was a blur, and now there are three weeks left. The good news is that getting ready for September is a much smaller job than it sounds — but only if you aim at the right thing.

The one idea that makes this easy

Math is the subject where this year’s work sits directly on top of last year’s. You can survive a shaky unit in science and still do fine next term. You cannot survive a shaky understanding of what a fraction is and then do fine when Grade 6 starts adding them.

So the goal before September isn’t to pre-teach next year’s curriculum. It’s the opposite: make sure the handful of load-bearing skills from last year are genuinely solid, because those are what the new material will be stacked on. A child who starts the year with those in place has a completely different September than one who doesn’t — even if they knew exactly the same amount in June.

The checklist, grade by grade

Below is what should be reasonably solid going into each grade. These aren’t the full Ontario curriculum — they’re the few skills that the next year leans on hardest, so a wobble in any of them tends to show up within weeks.

Going into Grade 3

  • Read, write and compare numbers up to 1,000
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers, including regrouping
  • Skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s comfortably
  • Split a shape or a set into equal parts and name halves and quarters

Going into Grade 4

  • Multiplication and division facts up to about 10 × 10 — growing toward automatic
  • Add and subtract three-digit numbers confidently
  • Understand a fraction as equal parts of one whole (not just “the top and bottom number”)
  • Place value into the thousands

Going into Grade 5

  • Fast, automatic recall of multiplication and division facts
  • Multiply a multi-digit number by a single digit
  • Recognise equivalent fractions (that ½ and 2/4 are the same amount)
  • Read and compare decimals to hundredths
  • Place value into the ten thousands

Going into Grade 6

  • Compare and order fractions, and find equivalent ones reliably
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
  • Multi-digit multiplication and division, including remainders
  • Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000
  • Decimals to thousandths, and how they connect to fractions

Going into Grade 7

  • Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators
  • All four operations with decimals
  • Percent basics, and how percents, fractions and decimals are the same idea in three outfits
  • Ratios and rates at an introductory level
  • Order of operations

Going into Grade 8

  • Integers — all four operations, including the negative-number rules
  • Multiply and divide fractions, not just add and subtract
  • Proportional reasoning: ratios, rates and percent problems
  • Write and simplify simple algebraic expressions
  • Solve one- and two-step equations

How to actually check — without a summer of worksheets

You do not need to test all of it. Pick two or three items from your child’s list and ask them casually, out loud, while you’re doing something else. The car is ideal. “Quick one — what’s 7 times 8?” and “is 3/4 bigger or smaller than 2/3?” tell you more in ten seconds than a workbook page does in twenty minutes.

What you’re listening for isn’t just the right answer. It’s how the answer arrives. Instant and confident is solid. Correct but slow, with visible counting, means it’s known but not yet automatic — which becomes a real problem when it’s one small step inside a much bigger question. A long pause followed by a guess is the one to pay attention to.

If you find a gap, don’t panic-buy a workbook

The reflex is to order something thick and start at page one. But a general workbook spends most of its pages on things your child already knows, and the specific broken thing gets four questions somewhere in the middle.

The better move is to go down, not across. If fractions are wobbly in Grade 6, the fix usually isn’t more Grade 6 fraction practice — it’s finding the earlier idea underneath that never fully landed, often equivalent fractions or even what a fraction represents at all. Rebuild that one rung and everything resting on it gets easier at once. Ten minutes on the right skill genuinely beats an hour on the wrong one, and it costs your child far less goodwill.

Common questions

How much math should my child do over the summer?

Less than most parents assume — as long as it’s the right math. Ten to fifteen focused minutes a few times a week on one specific weak skill beats an hour a day of general worksheets. The aim isn’t to pre-teach September; it’s to make sure nothing from last year is still shaky.

Is the summer math slide real?

Some loss over a long break is normal, and most children recover quickly. The bigger risk isn’t general forgetting — it’s a gap that was already there in June going unnoticed until October, when the new material that depends on it arrives.

What math should my child know before Grade 5?

The five that carry the most weight: automatic multiplication and division facts, multi-digit multiplication, understanding a fraction as equal parts of a whole, reading and comparing decimals to hundredths, and place value into the ten thousands.

My child struggled all last year. Should I get a tutor before September?

Find out what’s actually missing first. Struggling in Grade 6 usually traces back to one or two specific ideas from an earlier grade, not the whole year. Knowing the specific gap makes any help you get faster and cheaper.
